About the Speaker

Prof. Dr. Benedikt Frielinghaus is Professor of Cadastre and Land Management at Bochum University of Applied Sciences. Prior to his appointment, he worked for more than ten years as a self-employed, publicly appointed cadastral surveyor in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Drawing on this extensive professional experience, his teaching and research combine in-depth practical expertise with innovative technologies for the surveying profession.

His current research focuses on the digitalization and automation of administrative verification processes. At INTERGEO, Prof. Dr. Frielinghaus will present a keynote lecture entitled "Application of Artificial Intelligence for the Automated Verification of Cadastral Survey Documents: The Case of North Rhine-Westphalia." In this presentation, he will demonstrate how AI-based methods can sustainably improve quality assurance and increase the efficiency of geospatial data processing in practical applications.

Using Artificial Intelligence for the Automated Verification of Cadastral Survey Documents: The Example of North Rhine-Westphalia

As part of a feasibility study, using the cadastral regulations of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) as a case study, it was demonstrated that the application of artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods for the verification of cadastral survey documents is, in principle, technically feasible, legally permissible, and organizationally viable. A key prerequisite for successful implementation is a phased approach that minimizes technical, domain-specific, and organizational risks while enabling continuous improvements in quality. Given the currently limited machine readability of both submitted cadastral survey documents and historical cadastral records, a gradual implementation strategy appears to be both appropriate and practical. AI-based methods should therefore be regarded not as a replacement for human expertise, but as an assistive tool that supports, standardizes, and improves the efficiency of existing verification processes.
